Did You Know?

Saskatchewan is Canada's sunniest province, averaging from 2,000 to 2,500 hours of sunshine annually.

The world is our classroom, the curriculum is life and we are all teachers.

Mandate

The First Nations and Métis Education Branch provides leadership to build capacity within Saskatchewan's provincial education system to transform and empower learning communities (children, youth, educators, families and communities) toward a shared and harmonious future.

The branch is guided by principles of:

  • partnership and shared responsibility;
  • holistic, integrated approaches;
  • equity and excellence;
  • accountability and continuous improvement;
  • sustainability; and,
  • respect.

Through innovative partnerships and initiatives, the branch works to:

  • foster living and learning success for all students;
  • affirm cultural identity and diversity;
  • support all aspects of well-being (emotional, spiritual, physical and cognitive); and,
  • ensure that teaching and learning are guided by Indigenous Knowledge.

Vision

Saskatchewan's provincial Prekindergarten to Grade 12 education system is managed and controlled equitably by the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people it serves. As full partners at all levels of education planning and decision making First Nations, Métis and non-Aboriginal peoples share responsibility and authority for achieving goals for the benefit of all Saskatchewan students, teachers and communities.

The provincial education system plays a key role in ensuring the well-being and educational success of children and young people contributing to the prosperity and harmony of the province. Through partnerships with families, community members and human service providers, the provincial education system provides high quality and culturally affirming programs and comprehensive supports and services.

All children and young people have the opportunity to experience success and to develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary to become caring and contributing citizens. (Building Partnerships: First Nations and Métis Peoples and the Provincial Education System, 2003).

The unit is guided by the Aboriginal Education Provincial Advisory Committee Action Plan (2000-2005).

Goals

  1. All students achieve well-being and learning success.
  2. Cultural identity and diversity are affirmed in the learning program.
  3. Teaching and learning are guided by Indigenous Knowledge, research and best practices.
  4. Learning environments foster respect of self and others.
  5. Every school is a part of a larger learning community.
  6. The leadership of the provincial education system is shared through co-management and co-governance.
